This is all up on treated 4x4s. You can't see them cuz the weeds are a foot tall. They also hide a good portion of the wood. There's more here than the pic shows

And the worst part is that it's too dry to burn the small chit! All I can do is pile it up. We need rain bad. It's a dust bowl here.

The best part you ask? I'll be able to see the stars here tonight for the first time. :)

Oops. They're gonna have to drop that....they just don't know it yet. It was a good quality keeper sugar maple.

Somebody's gonna be eating ramen for a while. 20170818_140219.jpg

Might be a good place to hang out and watch the eclipse. It will last long enough for you to consumer a bit of barley pop too.

As for the leaning tree, expect to find more of those after a wind. Removing trees makes some of the neighbors a bit weak in the root.

I know people that had their 30 acres logged (selective), must be at least 10 years ago. They are still burning stuff from that cut as they made sure to get iffy stuff up front to use first, then stacked the More solid stuff off ground and in piles big enough to shed water. They heat exclusively with their big old cast iron wood stove.

Easy to panic at first until you get some sense of order made out of the first pile, then hopefully the rest doesn't seem so daunting if you just break it into "small" tasks to get done one-at-a-time.

    Be careful out there!

That BW is highly decay resistant, which is a good thing for a solid shoulder season performer.

Saturday turned into a bust. I got into a wasp nest Friday night and this was the result. I couldn't hold a saw Saturday.

And one just now for comparison.

Closing my hand hurt. I managed to get some starter fertilizer amd seed down on the food plots, and picked up little branches from all the trails.

Picked a couple new trees for stands, set up a game cam, drank more beer, looked at more stars...not a bad day...even with a bum hand.

If these plots are under the old canopy it might be worth your while to pull a soil sample. I had a buddy of mine put one in after he made a clearing and he couldn't get anything he planted to grow worth a damm. Turned out it was off the charts acidic and he had to lime the crap out of it.

Yes, this is normal. All the leaves make it very acidic. Also best to use the powdered lime rather than the pelletized lime. The pellets are good for only one year but, it is easier to spread...and a lot more expensive. Still, I quite often use it when I get a good buy on it. Usually buy stuff like that in the fall.
