Here's my "Defiance" Volcano II wood furnace. She has a huge firebox and will burn for hrs on end. It heats the basement to 90+ deg and once the floor joists soak up the heat the whole house feels nice and comfortable. Unfortunately my HVAC system and duct work is not in a good location to pipe the wood furnace into. And having low ceilings in the basement doesn't help. All i all it's a great stove and im lookin forward to many more years with her. The ugly duct box on top has since been re-designed In all her glory
Too bad you couldn't fabricate some kind of insulated metal ductwork to tie that into your furnace system....... I'm sure that puppy throws some serious heat!
Oh it throws some heat. The air comin outta that thing will just about burn your skin. Fortunately it's not far from the basement stairs so i just leave the door open and the heat comes rights on up. One of these days i'll figure a way to tie it all in without adding more headbangers in the basement.
Thats a Monster there!! Thanks for the pics!! Any way to run a few independent ducts upstairs from the furnace? Rather than connect to existing HVAC? I wish I made my Pellet furnace an independent unit, separate from my ProPain's duct work.
Unfortunately the best location for the stove/chimney was directly below the bedrooms. Just the radiant heat from it get's the bedrooms crankin(sometimes sleep with the windows open) along with the floors being nice and toasty. Tryin to run independent ducts to the other side of the house is possible but there's no way to run them without totally being in the way. My ceiling's low enough as it is and of course the floor joists are running the wrong direction. Can't even tuck the duct up in them.
Are you still running this stove? I just got a Volcano III and have it running in my shop at the moment. My dad sold them so I'd run around the plant as a kid. I used to hang out in the Big Boss's office sometimes. Nice guy. They were built in a old railroad roundhouse in Calumet Mich. That building was heated by a million btu wood fired furnace that had a electrically lifted door they'd dump whole logs in with a folk lift to feed the beast. I know quite a bit about the company needless to say. Maybe I should contact some folks and see if there is more info I could find. Here's a little puzzle they'd hand out. It's still fun. Take and cut along the lines then count the guys then swap the top pieces around then count them again. Answer on the back said "He's gone to deliver another Defiance stove" If anyone needs more info I'll try to help.
164 is what my thermometer said the hot air coming out of Volcano was this evening. I've seen it as hot as 200. My dad, who sold these, had a Dodge Warlock pickup that had a Volcano in the back he'd do live demos with. He'd offer $20 (good money in 1978) to anyone who could hold their hand over the hot air exhaust vent for 10 seconds. He never had to pay it out.
Hey yoop! Im just disconnected her this fall and went old school again. I picked up a fisher grandma bear. The volcano gaves ys some great heat over the last 7 or 8 years but it was a little finicky. If i didn't have the intake/secondary air knobs set just right, it had a tendency to try and run away. The coil on the thermostat knob (least that's what I called it) was worn out and would stick sometimes, also letting her get a little too hot. But the main reason switched back was because I was tired of relying on electric to run the blower. I just wanted to go back to the basics.
You may need to research that one and if you have some old grates, you may even need to get them made. Any welding shop can make grates "reasonably cheap".
Hey I’m new to the group. I recently purchased a home and it came with a Volcano II. Now for some context I was raised in Arizona, so I don’t have a clue of how wood furnaces work. I have done some research but there seems to be little to no info on the Volcano II, so I have to rely on different models. I’m trying to get it running so I can use it this coming winter. Does anyone have the owners manual or know where I can download one? Any help would be appreciated.
