Just out of Curiosity, has anyone ever counted a round about number of how many average size split logs are in a cord of wood?

That depends of course on the size and length of each split. I knew a guy who sold firewood and said he would count 175 splits at 16" for a third of a cord.

My stacks hold about a half a cord each and have about 275 - 300 or so splits at 18".

So about 550 - 650 splits for a cord based on a whole lot of guessing as to the split size and length?

You will get a feel and an idea real close when you stack your trailer or whatever, buy measurement and cord calculation.
Some people set up a rack and stack it in there 4 foot high 8 foot long for a face cord, before they load it

Right where I want to be.
I started counting a "face cord" a couple times and marked each split with a sharpie.
I seem to remember more like 300 or so. It really does vary depending on split size.
I've seen some huge splits in some stacks that might only total 150 or less.
BRB......I just counted 280 in one of mine.

No catch, just wondering. I was thinking if somebody were to keep a count in mind while splitting to give an idea of where you may be. Like I said no catch just a curiosity thing, if it even matters.

When I had logs loads, I'd estimate how many it took to make a "face". Usually took about a tank of fuel and oil, and it's also what fit in my utility trailer.
All good indicators to tell me how much work I'd done.
I like keeping track of stuff......little OCD. :D
When I work in the woods, I know about how many trees it takes to fill the back of the Jeep, and about how much wood that is. Helps me know how much more I need to cut.

If I didn't mark 'em, I'd end up counting 4000 in a "face". That's too many.:)

I never counted the number of pieces but somewhere on the internet I read between 600 and 650 splits per cord or 7,500.00 toothpicks. No lie has to be true read it on the internet and we all know it has to be true.

I've seen the firewood cut by others, and maybe, they can come up with a number.

My firewood is a wild mix of sizes and shapes because it's from tree service wood. Big trunks, little trunks, each one is unique and often a PITA. Even with a splitter some end up thin and some end up thick. Lengths are never perfectly consistent either. At the end of the day each split varies greatly in size.

maybe face recognition would work if papadave would draw smileys on the ends of each split

A yard full of little faces might be a little Steven King-ishly frightening on a moon lit night.
    Bad idea.

Hmm. I think we all wondered that at one point, but gave up because there were more things to keep us busy that were more important.

    I would say between 200 to 300 x3.
Why? Because the mind is thinking how many u burn a night and wonder how many splits u burn?? I have wondered myself. I probly burn about 10 to 12 medium splits, 5 small ones a night.....about...

I need a new sharpie. The ones I have don't have enough ink to make all those smilies.

That would slow down the stacking a bit.

For the size and length (16") of firewood splits I burn, there is 550-600 pieces per cord.
