    X2 on that.
You always want flames in there top bottom or both, it's not a cat stove.
At the end of the burn when you just have coals it's fine you don't have flames

Yes, the idea of the auto set-back is that you fill the stove with wood in preparation for a slow burn. It will allow that load of wood to burn hot and get hot before it sets the damper back to low.

Best thing you can do learning to run a new stove is keep going outside and looking at the chimney to see if you have a little smoke a lot of smoke or no smoke, to determine what settings are right for a cleanburn.
Once you get it going you should not see any smoke or very very little

I still go outside and check the chimney sometimes if it seems things are not the way they should be

Although I don't put a bunch of kindling in my stove to start it up, like the videos, they have some good information CoreyB you should check out this sticky thread here.

Well I got an 8 hr burn out of an armload of wood. Granted it was not cold and only enough coals to restart a fire. I am interested in seing how it works on a cold day and a full load of wood. It doesn't seem to want to get much above 400-450 deg. But I have not loaded her and tried either. Lol

Oh she will cruise along at 500/550F with no problem. My manual for my stove said that it is best to not operate at 600F for long periods of time. Make sure the STT is in the correct place on the stove; for me, that is on top of the stove above the door either left or right. Not every part of the stove will be the same temperature that is why you measure in the place specified by the stove manufacturer.

You could use a stick. Or a long piece of kindling.....AKA, a stick.
Might be a PITA, but would work for a while.

Good info from Kimberly , CoreyB . Glad you got the stove up and running. Now begins the fun part.......really learning how to run it well to keep all those ladies warm.
The manual is also a good resource for that.:D

Thanks papadave . Not that I am a young buck but sometimes I am when it comes to that reading the manual thing. Lol I even downloaded it in the phone. So far in the few small burns she seems to choooooch along pretty easy. Nothing overly hot yet. Going to burn a fire tonight just for fun.

Got to run the Englander Madison the past couple days. I need to focus a bit more on shoulder wood. I am amazed how so much heat is projected from the front of the stove. You can tell it was designed to have its back to the wall or in the corner. I have no problem getting over night burns and have enough coals to get a fire going with minimal effort. The aas set back seems to work good. Keeps the fire CHOOCHINN around 500 deg. Gets up to about 600 and shuts the air down a bit and she coasts down to about 450 and she starts putting the air to it again and she climbs back up. Really neat for just a mechanical mechanism.
I am excited for it to get cold to see how she works out.

I was surprised too with my EPA stove how much heat comes out the front, my old non EPA stove radiated heat out everywhere.
So you been getting the house a little warm using the hardwood?
Is there a blower on that stove?

And getting the house to 85- 90 deg does not take much effort. 4 pieces of oak and hickory and your there! Lol

Sounds like you need to burn some Pine, Poplar, Box Elder something like that, it won't last as long and not much coaling, but hey you had to test it out right
I never use my blower it shoulder season, when it gets really cold, just on low works best

I didn't notice this with mine; I need to watch when I start burning again. I thought with mine it was a latch system; once the latch is release, the damper stays in the low setting. Could be different on your stove.

Mine came with one of the hairdryer blowers and it is too noisy for me. I like quiet. I have the blower from the old stove that Canadian border VT gave me; the baffle was burned out in that stove and the company is out of business, and I think I will try to mount it to the stove. It has a variable speed control.

Yes, these Madisons throw out a lot of heat; even on the coldest days last year I was toasty warm.
