Did you pre lube the crank bearings on assembly? I lubed the poo outta 'em...she was really loaded up when it first fired...slobbered oil all over the front of the cases

I tuned it. Then I walked over to the log and it died. It would not start but did not crank harder than normal. I put it on fast idle and it fired. I turned the idle up a hair and it was fine which I thought was odd. I Revved it up a little and maybe at about 7000 or 8000 rpm it went waaaaaa and died. I knew something bad happened. It cranked over hard like it had a tight spot. So there were no signs until 30 seconds before it happened.

Yes, I lubed everything very well. Check out my first start video and see how it smoked. I had oil spray on the front of the saw.

Hmm, sounds like you did everything right...dang spotty QC.
I think I have heard of 1 or maybe 2 others that have puked a rod...I assumed they were built poorly...maybe not.

JMS posted a pic in this thread. Gravedigger on OPE and a guy on YouTube had one or two go.

You gonna rebuild? Looks like replacement cranks are not expensive...may as well get it running...I guess you could part it out too

I'm not sure right now. Yesterday I called a dealer about a crank. It is $393. Today I called a saw shop that used to be a stihl dealer. He thought he had a new crank. He said if he had one he would let it go cheap just to get rid of it. So I called him back in an hour and he did not have a chance to check. I called him back and he went and checked. I could hear the cranks tinging against each other. He said here is an 064, 044,036, 034, 064, and 031 crank. So no 660 crank. He does have a 064 that needs some work. It has been there a year, maybe more. He is going to call the guy and see what he wants for it for me. The 660 clone saw would not be worth half what I have in it. If I get a new AM crank it is not going to be a cheap one. I think the cheap ones may be made wrong. I need to see a pic of a 660 crank to tell.

Nah, I don't think that's it...I've seen lots of rods with the sides notched like that.
I bet it was just a bad bearing...or maybe it had a little dirt in it. I flushed the crank and rod bearings and then oiled the heck out of 'em...they were not as smooth as I would have liked...better after, but probably not OEM smooth.

I thought you would know. I guess it was a bad bearing or poor tolerances.

I usually am a fan of trying AM products, but I avoid crankshafts. Heck, I have 3 saws with chinese bearings and quite a few 1127s with Nachis... but only one AM crank in an 029. Huztl / Farmertec shortblock. It had a bearing failure so I put Nachis on it/- it’s alive for now.
I’ve heard of a Raisman crank surviving for a while, but not many others yet.

Grab those 064 cranks if the price is right.

I'm still not sure what to do with it. Right now I don't want another AM crank. I just ordered so Nachi bearings (for the counterweight shaft) for a compactor I'm working on, I guess they were OEM. If I could find a used crank at a decent price, I'd fix it. I'd really like to have it running now to use. I have about 6 cords that needs cut and I wanted to put some run time on it. I might stick it in a box for now and just patiently wait for a crank.

I keep thinking about them, and the 044 crank. I don't even any of those saws. The 034 and 036 crank may be worth while.

For sure— and they’d be good trade bait for a decent oem 660 crank.

Afleetcommand on YouTube had a Chicom 660 lose a big end bearing. He loaned it out to a friend who cuts wood for living to get time on the build. Starts around 2:00-3:00 mark.

I got two new 064 cranks today. I think I could use one these in the clone saw if get a flywheel. The problem is, the saw would devalue the crank.

I also got an 064. No pics of it yet.

I tore the saw down completely tonight. When I did I noticed the worm gear was melted. I did not think too much of it at the time. I thought it was just an inferior gear and maybe rubbing. I checked the bearings in the crank case. The flywheel side feels good. The PTO side is a little rough. Then I noticed that the PTO side of the crank looks like it was a little warm, so the PTO side crank bearing was also on its way out.
