Busy weekend at the Curry homestead! Push mowed the lawn, as always, on Friday. Had my buddy over Saturday to take down the dangerous leaning maple - got some pics of that here if you missed them: http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/index.php?threads/next-weekend-project.5368/ Stacked what was left of the ash on Sunday. I know of a couple other small ash trees down that I'll probably grab this week just to fill the rest of the stack. 10 pallets filled; room for 8 more behind the garage: So the plan is to work on some Black Locust next, because that will need a while to season as well. I hauled and bucked the majority of 4 ~14"avg trees that were down, plus a trailer load of branch sized stuff that I had worked on in my "practice" session. I'm loving how the sawbuck has improved my work flow. I can buck it into 2 and 3-fer size logs out in the woods, and drag or roll them over to the trailer. Once they're on the trailer, I'm home free - hardly break a sweat turning them into rounds at the sawbuck: Averaged about an hour and a half per tree with this method, to haul it out of the woods and buck it up. But wait, there's still another row : I'm also making an improvement to the sawbuck. I made the first cut for the auxiliary beer-holding device; it's about the only possible improvement I could made to the current design Cheers to another great weekend! Looking forward to seeing all the work you guys did too!
Great pics! Love your property and processing area! Thats some beautiful BL! Nice stacks too...... like a pro!
This is my gym membership right here. Never been so healthy in my life. Couple years worth of heat put up, and the only thing it's cost me is about 50lbs! I'm 6'3" and currently 204lbs - down from 250+ about 2 years ago.
Awesome hoard, Shawn! Most here know I'm a big fan of both black and honey locust.....I burned a PILE o f honey locust and quite a bit of black last year, the stuff is amazing. Didn't cut any yet this year, I do have one tree to do up the mountain but that won't be used for quite some time..... Keep the pics coming....
Nice set up & system. Prime BTUs ! ! Fantastic pictures: wood hauler, logs, rounds, splits, stacks, with wood chip all over the ground Can almost smell fresh the cut wood Got a better pic of the wood hauler ? Looks like a real tough steel trailer ? How long does it take to season locust ?
Thanks You can see my modest wood hauler setup in the background of this pic. Just a little JD riding mower, pulling my grandfather's old wood trailer. He built the trailer almost from scratch, and used it for 30-40 years himself. I need to put some new inner fenders on it, but that should be really easy. The original ones were made out of wood so I can easily replace them when I get around to it. This setup has worked out pretty good this summer; all the low spots are pretty dry, and it's so small that I can get just about anywhere without having to widen any trails. Tough getting any traction other times of the year though. Pretty soon, I'll have my grandfather's old Farmall Cub that he used to pull it with. It's still at my dad's house, and it's leaking a little oil, so I'm hoping he works on it before I bring it home. Still runs like a champ though, and it's pretty small too, but I should have way better traction with the tractor tires and chains. Hopefully enough to drag some logs out after the ground freezes up. As far as seasoning time on locust, I don't really know for sure. I'm assuming on the high side, due to it's hardness. I'm probably going to let it sit for about 2 years, like the ash. The next couple years for me will be more soft stuff like cherry and maple, that I can split in the spring, and use by the winter.
Wow Shawn. Ash and locust. Some of the best of the lot. Glad that new sawbuck is working out good for you too.
The wood hauler is top notch, + it comes with a lot of history Noodle a coupe locust boards for the inner fenders, will last forever or at least another 30 - 40 years
Unfortunately no BL around my neck of the woods... I just settle for oak w/r and hickory The AL state champion tree Honey Locust is not far from my house and I have seen it personally several times on quad rides. That is the only Honey Locust I have ever see in this area though
