I'm guessing that turkey is a lot like deer or moose, in the sense that the cook determines if it's edible or not. My sis in law had us stay for supper one time, moose in mushrooms/sauce. It was so tough I thought I was gonna chip a tooth. Yet a roast she gave us cooked up tender as beef roast here. I wish we had wild turkey so I could find out. I'm gonna go pout now.
Well it's 61 right now and we've had sun on and off all day, birds are singing like crazy there was 15 turkeys wandering the field across the road so what better thing to do then pattern the new turkey gun. Probly the shortest lightest 10 gauge I've ever seen and after 4 shells through it I had enough. Two different loads at 10 and 40 yards. At ten yards she throws a 6-7" pattern and at 40 yards it's a majority of bb's on a 8 1/2x 11 with around a dozen in the skull and vertebrae. I think it will work!
Yeah and put two 3 1/2" out of my 12 gauge 870 super mag and then a box of 25 light loads out of a new little mossberg I just got. I'm hurting today!!! The 10 is a New England sb2 pardner with a 23" barrel with a extra full screw in choke. Boy does it bark! My dads got the 28" version and shooting that isn't so bad it's night and day with this thing.
Color me jealous of you folks who get to hunt them when the timing is right. Our season is way too late in the cycle. April 26th here. Hens will have eggs 2 weeks old by then. I met some serious beard hunters yesterday. They are off to the Yucatan Peninsula soon to complete their world slam. Them dudes gobbled in their sleep.
Any luck out there? Season starts may 1st here. Got the trail cams out! Lots of tracks and droppings. Another week I'll be scouting for roosting sites!
Been seeing them almost every day. Still 15 days till season opens. I have a feeling they are going to be hen'd up tight and/or done chasing hens altogether by opening day.
Been seeing birds here and there around the area. Best one was two nights ago I was talking with blacksmith about some new box calls and I needed to take a picture of one I already had. Seeing as how it was almost 70 out we had all the doors and windows open in the house, I just happened to play some tunes on the call because why not right?! So I proceed to go outside to do some work and happen to look in the field not 50 yards from the house here is a jake coming right towards the yard!
Lol he must be having a dry spell! I'm in 5r and the flocks have broken and there is gobbling into late morning.
