But they have declined since the limit went to 3??? We had decades of population increase with a limit of 5. I really don't think that's The issue.
I hunted turkey in SC for a few years, last year was 08. There was always lots of turkeys to hung and most of the guys I knew didn't use all their tags. So many turkeys and the population of people was low compared to where we live now so that helped with the higher bag limit
If it anything like Ontario where we are, there are a lot of likely contributing causes like long cold winters, coyotes, coons and crows but there has also been an almost 10 fold increase in the number of hunters.
Yea back then it was up. The population I think has definitely declined since then. Coyote population is one thing but probably not the sole factor in decrease. Clemson released some deer predidation numbers by coyote about 2 years ago and it is crazy how high it was. Like close to 50% of fawns. Have to look it up..may of been in the 60s. Some of the preliminary research was going on when I was in Schoolthere over a decade ago by some buddies on coastal plantations.
Time for the season to start up again! I live in NY and we also have a few hundred acres in PA and just bought my nonresident liscence last night and I am going to hunt both places this year again for the first time in years!! Pretty excited and can't wait! Of course got to mix it with some trout fishing too! Anyone seeing many birds yet?
My tags just came in the mail two weeks ago. As warm as it's been this year for us the turkeys are going to be over by the time April 1st rolls around and season comes in.
Its been turkey season weather here for the past couple weeks and we're still almost 2 full months away from opening day. Might be a weird year.
I'm thinking the same it's going to be 60's today and even warmer by Saturday the worst part will be the early bugs!
I don't hunt turkey, but the tree service guy who supplies me with wood does. Our season in NE Ohio has been pushed back this year because of some studies showing birds here are a few weeks behind the rest of the state. What a year to make that change. It's supposed to be 70+ here tomorrow and there are only two days in the 10 day with forecast lows below freezing.
It's been spring here since the end of january. I'm only 34 but this is the warmest year I ever remember and I'm from the coast! I have been basically doing one load a day in the stove since like the second week of January, I usually load 2x a day through Feb into March even. Yes I know I'm in SC. We are spoiled with a warm house, I'm use to the heat and our house has little to no insulation and is BIG. So it's not like my whole house is 85 if I have a fire with lows in the 40s.
bocefus78 I heard on gobbling this morning. He was most likely still on the roost, but still. Don't recall ever hearing one this early in the year.
lukem That's freaking nuts. February gobbling...who would've thought? Mr Tom is gonna need some viagra.....he's got a long wait. In the event of a gobble lasting more than 4 hours....seek professional help.
Let's hope for some weather to move in and shut them up. Not looking good for the next 10 days though.
They gobble all year, just a lot more in the spring. I've heard them in July, September and of course during March-May. I can't wait!
I hear them all year as well. I'm as usual excited! The Mrs is probably more excited. Not worried about the weather at all. There is always fall turkey.
I had 9 go through the yard at the edge of the woods the other day but otherwise have not heard a sound here. Can't start playing with them until 4/24.
