I wanted to Post something that I related to “blacksmith” which may help someone else. It’s about the “661” with “M-tronic” running permissives it may have been a good idea but so far it has turned out to be a nightmare for some Sthil saw users with M-tronic integrated in their saw. I hope this is understood correctly.I explained this in more detail to “blacksmith” on a reply to one of his questions If would like to read all of the causes leading up to the failures you can read them on the reply’s on treads in our discussion. If that is alright with FHC members.
Good afternoon “blacksmith” hope you are doing fine! Question do you know how to reset your sáw to factory specifications? If not I will be glad to show you. Myself and Rich have come to the same conclusion, if your saw is not stamped with 1144C, and has a coil stamped with 4701A, and the coil wire is a straight boot. If you do have all this then it a bastard to start and run correctly, then more than likely you need the up dated module. But keep in mind the A’s were a problem with the cylinder and when saw gets hot it will do funky stuff. If you can see what is stamped on your cylinder. Here are your resets: Anymore resets must be done by a Stihl dealer using the “M-tronic” testing module. Have a nice day!
By the way one of the modules cannot be changed or re-tuned, while one can, hope like hell your’s can be tuned. What it does basically is it adjusts your fuel and timing curve. You can get the complete Sthil guide @ Sthil Diagnostic Software Download (slideblast).

    (1) With the chain brake engaged…

    a. Hold throttle and set start lever to Start position (Δ)

    b. Start saw and let idle in Start position (Δ) for 90 seconds

    c. Blip throttle to bring the machine to the Run position (I)

    d. Immediately move lever to Stop position (O)

    e. This will reset the carb to original factory setting.

    (2)With the chain brake engaged…

    a. Hold throttle and set start lever to Start position (Δ)

    b. Start saw then Blip throttle to bring the machine to the Run position (I)

    c. Let idle in Run position (I) for 90 seconds

    d. Immediately move lever to Stop position (O)

    e. This will calibrate the idling characteristics of the saw.

    (3) With the chain brake engaged…

    a. Hold throttle and set start lever to Start position (Δ)

    b. Start saw then Blip throttle to bring the machine to the Run position (I)

    c. Disengage chain brake and make five uniform cuts through a minimum 12-inch-diameter log.

    d. This will calibrate the full throttle characteristics of the saw.

I hope this my help you, maybe you already know this but I added them anyway. Have a nice day!

Very good info here. I’m sure many m tronic owners do not read the owners manual. Just like I didn’t.

This just followed me home from my local Stihl dealer with a 6 pack of ultra synthetic gas mix. Stumper and Blacksmith for helping me learn my new saw.

“Rope did you know that you were buying a saw Sthil has done the most R&D on and it has the new module and the 4701A coil the good stuff. You got a great saw and I like the ultra synthetic oil it is good oil. Make sure you break it in properly. Again congratulations...

I work midnights and will have time to thoroughly read the manual. Yes Sir, I’m going to take care of her. She will be treated right.

No I don’t realize what all she is. I know Stihl does a good job with their products.

well 90% of the time anyway, not faulting Stihl but stacked tolerances from various suppliers can cause the best intentions to go south.

The vast majority of my firewood is spruce and I have plans to buck the pile vs cut each stick as a single. The plan is to bury the 25 inch bar and cut. I will give my opinion once I have some time doing the job.

Mine is still at the dealer after the gathering at Walt's so I can't say.

I know the fuel mixing selenoid and the coil have been replaced. The coil replacement seems to have done the most good, however the saw now seems to flood which was never a problem before.

Someone in the know here, as well as the Stihl regional manager, said that the flooding is most likely caused by an intake boot. Acording to both sources the boot has been redesigned to prevent flooding. I guess we'll soon see.

On a scarier side note, the saw mechanic at the Stihl dealer seemed to be unaware of the differences in the starting prodedures between the 661 and the 660.:picard:

If I can give any advice it's to run these computer saws balls out from the get go , I've had maybe 12 of them at this point and it kinda sets the tone for them..great saws when they run right.

I suppose there is no way to defeat the computer aspect - Do not like seeing things like chainsaws and such being mucked up a cpu particularly when parts or sections are dealer only type service ( and that right there is what grinds my bones) when there is a problem. These are tools to be used not sitting on a service bench because of some pie in the eye cpu related service problem. Please note: I spent a whole lot of years on the other side of that desk- figuring out ways around computer glitches in equipment- :hair:

Dealer and I had that conversation, Dealer said they are ready to work out of the box. Work it like it was born to do! Pending how I feel when I get home (on midnight shift) may take it to the wood pile.
