Hello all, Well most of you know Grandma has been here for about 35 years and has been as faithful as you can get! Well it's time to give her a full facelift, new dress and some shinny stuff! If all goes well I'm looking to get her doors nickel plated, I just ordered new spring handles from woodman's for her and the XL this afternoon and I'm going to bring here down to "parade rest" this weekend weather permitting. I got some studly men from the work place are going to help me get her out, It only requires … I will keep this post running, I just ordered 25 fire bricks from my friend so she will be relined and Here is the first set of pics before we remove her this weekend, I'll do the progress pics as we go.
You can tell she has put her work in over the years. Aside from the rust and a few wear spots I think it'll clean up nicely. Firebrick replacement is a no-brainer, always a good idea after so many years. How are the interior parts hanging in there?
Definitely following this one! I've got that grandpa i picked up this past winter that will need a makeover sooner or later.
Inside is in good shape, "dirty" but in good shape. I'll know more though once I drag out the fire brick.
If you have a local stone and brick supply, They usually have them and at "much" cheaper than say Home depot, TSC has them and ACE hardware also has them.
Definitely following this one, as I may be replacing some fire bricks soon, as well. Can't hurt to see a "qualified" person do it first, right?
Fire Brick is actually easy! First thing you always do before removal is make a drawing or snap a picture of the location/s of the bricks and install them in the reverse way you take them out. Fishers are relatively straight forward, you take out the sides, then the back and bottom last. You may need a concrete/masonary blade for cutting, I have one for my 4-1/2" angle grinder, Any good hardware has them.
I ordered mine online (ebay), because that was cheaper than Lowes, even considering shipping. Then I found them at ACE for significantly less than what I paid. YMMV.
Today A great friend and I started to remove Grandma! She had a lot of crap up the chimney but I didn't clean it like I normally do come spring. So, after some B!TC#!NG and complaining along with getting dirty, it's out the door and on her way to the refinishing area. The fire brick for the most part was in "ok" shape, had 5 cracked and broke but she's getting all new. More to come! Beer to commence!
Stripped the bottom and painted this morning before it got to dam hot! I wanted to do more but the breeze is a bit much for painting.
I just got a price quote for nickel plating the doors, $250.00. I think that's the plan!!! It'll be a couple weeks before I scrape the $$$ together but it's gonna be cool.
Well, Had to shift gears from Nickel plating the doors to painting, Actually two factors fell into place; 200 mile round trip to plating company, twice. $250.00 for plating and gas for the trips. And now the front wheel bearings on my truck just went, so I'm doing wheel bearings and front breaks tonight so there went my $$$ for the doors! . Well, I get them painted nicely and have the wife paint up the trees and the logo with a silver boiler paint, It's the best I can do now, winter isn't to far off and it's got to be back in and connected by mid October.
