Pshhhh, now ya tell me after digging that trench for 10 hours. Long section is about 120' with a planned staircase in the center. Then the far side is perhaps 30'. Both will taper up to something around 3 or 3'6". I will figure out the height once I get closer. I did put in about 5 hours and got half of the next foot of the wall done. It is slowwwwww going now that it's a giant jigsaw puzzle. Masonry is an art and there is no doubt those guys earn their money.
17 hours on the second course, and I still need to fill in some on the back side to call that ready for base & backfill. ChipsFlyin I tried the fabric close to wall and backfill in a "u" shape but it was a bad idea. Reason being that I don't want to put the effort in to make the back face flush. The fabric ends up not allowing the crushed stone to get in the cracks and crevices. I pulled it up today but with the wall an easy 18" at the base, there shouldn't be any base sneaking through. This is no mason's wall, I just am doing my best to make it 1) not fall over 2) look ok.
Progress was halted when I made it a priority to grow grass in Sept/Oct. Actually going to start the lower backfill on Sunday if I can eek out a few hours of free time. Will be visiting your neck of the woods on the day after Turkey Day - we always pick out our tree at Keith's Farm.
About 7 hours, left side is about the height I want, will finish with capstones later. 48 hours total (I think?)
I don't know how I missed this thread when it started, but just spent some time catching up on it.....stone masonry is a passion of mine, as you may already know!! I think you're doing a fantastic job, yes it's laborious and time consuming, but will be SOOOOO worth it in the end. Can't wait to see it all done.
Oh and the sheds both look fantastic! You're gonna have a killer backyard when done! Don't forget the stone keyhole firepit!!
Started back up, put in 4 hours last weekend and about 6 this weekend. My paper at home says I am at 53 total hours, so we'll go with that. Hour 53:
