Well yesterday i picked up a grandma bear from a fella about an hr from here. It was already in very good shape so i gave it a wipe down, hit it with some steel wool and gave it a fresh coat of paint. After lots of great info from the fisher man himself WeldrDave my buddy and i did some brick cutting and added a baffle. After some test burns it was time to move out the old volcano and let the fisher relieve it of its duties.

A few pics starting from the way i got it. Second is the baffle plate we installed. Third is in place in the basement today. Fourth is obviously my chimney but with the stove running at 350° and the air set about 1/3 open. She's burnin clean! :)

No worries dave, family always comes first!. Now i am gonna need some pointers on this old girl. She wants to hurn HOT! It's a totally different animal than the volcano. I played with the air settings a little yesterday evening. I was only burning 2-3 splits at a time and she was still running around 500° with the dampers about 1/8" open.

Ok, glad you saw that! Fishers heat and run much better once you have established a hot coal bed. When I say this, you may scratch you head but just "trust me"!
Get her going, lit off, leave one door open a crack for a bit till the fire gets established, "close" both vents in the doors fully, then only open them 1/2 to 1/3 turn from the closed position and shut the doors. Leave it be, don't open it for at least an hour now. If you see the temps going to high, close the draft knobs a little more. If your stove thermometor is a 500*, in the middle, thats where they like to run at, you will be burning very nice. Also, I noticed in your pic's thet your thermometor is in the front, try putting it on the side near the top and see the temps. Right where you have it is where your baffle is deflecting the flame so thats where a lot of your heat will be! "thats a good thing" especially for cooking! I'll PM you my Phone # and give a call if you want, once you get the nature of the "beast" you'll be fine.:)

Very nice! Good to here another is still burning away. Many of Fishers became scrap and people got scared from the bad o'le EPA saying they were gonna get fined, bla, bla, bla...

Yes, they were in the "smoke dragon" catagory but if you figured them out and baffled them, you could get them to burn real efficient, with in reason.:)

SM, I saw the temps were a bit chilly in your neighborhood this morning, did you get Grandma fired up? How's she doing now with the baffle mod, re-mod…? I finally found my pics of my Grandmas baffle design, I since cut three holes in it for a bit more flow in the center.

    Works awesome now!

Hey dave! Ive had grandma fired up quite a few times this past week, especially last night! Hit 31° here when I left this morning. She's been burning good and I'm slowly getting it dialed in. Average burn temps with 4-5 splits is 400-550° stove top and anywhere from 450-750° internal flue temp. I'm still not comfortable enough with her to load completely. My baffle is very similar to yours of course since that's what I based it off of

Thats where I have mine on the Ole' All Nighter. Temps still occasionally get around 600 or above. This is with only a 4-5 split load. Its dry poplar so I'm thinking this has something to do with it. Any thoughts?

You guy's are on it!!!! 750* on the flue is a "tad" high, you want to be in the 500* range. "BUT" with that temp you will not get any build up of creosote! ;) Your on it now SM!!! just dial her in and you'll "LOVE" her! I'm sure you feel the heat!

I'm hittin above 600 on the stove step. Flue seems to run 150 to 200 behind that.

I don't know how you can keep your flue temps lower than the stove top? Mine is always higher. Guess my draft is just a little too strong?

WeldrDave that 750° is internal flue temp and only if i leave the air knobs open too much.

Once I get my girl going, after about a hour I "nearly" have the stove and flue temps within a 100* of each other. SM you have a good draft "and thats great" ! Not a worry, your in the park and it seems she is doing just fine!:)… See what happens when your running her for a while and get the stove temp between 400* and 500* and hold it there? If your flue is 600* or less, your on the mark!

You have a good deflection of heat in the stove.

WeldrDave I've got er burnin good tonight! I know you said i wouldn't need the pipe damper and ive left mine basically open but I think my draft is just too strong so i closed the damper a bit and the temps have leveled out good. Witj 4 splits the stove top is sittin around 450° and pipe probe is staying around 500°. I'm getting ger figured out slowly!

It was the owners manual that doesn't call for one. By reducing the flow with the draft knobs, you should be able to control that. And with the baffle, you deflect more heat to the surrounding stove area. Just be careful of back draft with the damper on light off, you'll fill the house full of smoke. If it's working thats super! Go with it… Just never seen it needed with a Fisher o_O:)
