Really nice. Just like past Vets from past Wars when they pass we lose a lot of info about them. I'm in awe of the WW2 vets accomplishments.

damm!!!!!!!! Talk about a small world. I know and have been on the same property as him!!! The now no longer existant camp croft. Its in rural upstate south carolina. I went there on a complaint of reimbursement for the new landowner when our contractor cleared the land to remove old UXO (unexploded ordinance) from the site a few years ago.

The army decommissioned the site decades ago and supposedly cleared the property. Then some mutions were uncovered somehow? Army had to reclear anything. Still can see the berms where the rifle ranges were. I walked the same ground as your grandad and saw the same berm he shot into. It is a realitivly small base or camp as they were known back then.

And I have been in the same place as many of you army guys also. Do a good bit of work at Ft. Jackson that now a days trained most...something like 60% of all soldier's. It use to not be that high but they have got rid of some and expanded other TRADOC installations in the last decade or so.

And Louis Grassley is the brother of senator Charles Grassley, who was a good friend of Grandpa's.

I'd suggest you going to a site called "Together we served.com". It allows former members of all military branches to sign in, become a member and possibly get in touch with people they may have known or at least have been in the same unit.

It also allows for family members to become members (in a limited capacity IIRC) to find connections and many members offer very good suggestions to help families find information. This is where you will have the best luck as I don't believe there are a great number of WWII Vets on board.

The cool thing is once all the unit information in entered on all units you were in, ANY members that belonged to those units past or present are immediately tagged to your information. The bad thing is they only have available the information of Veterans that belong to the site.
