been looking here and there when i have some time. spent 3 hours in the woods sunday. NOTHING! south slopes, north slopes, hilltops, ash, poplar, oak, recently logged area, creek bottom. NOTHING! not just morels, but no fungi at all. last year i had lots of different shrooms, but no morels. might have been a bit later in the year though. NWNJ, soil should be warm enough by now, right? maybe i just dont have them in my area. learning why morel locations are so coveted...
We drive about an hour to our morel location. Going up again this weekend, haven't found anything yet but the recent spike in temps and the rain finally stopping has me optimistic. Morels love dead elm, btw.
Morels have been done for a couple weeks here. I don't think there's any "secret sauce" for finding them. Some people say dead elm...but I've found just as many under every other kind of tree. I've found them growing in people's yards before.
They've had yet to start up here as recent as Monday. I hear they are finding them 50 miles south now , so I think we might get some this weekend.
Found exactly one in the yard behind the house a couple years ago, and a few days ago found 2 under a Spruce tree near the deck. I shoulda' sold 'em. Some friends sold 12 pounds for just under $300 a few days ago. Where they found that many...I don't know.
I think I gathered close to 10 pounds this year. I just finished eating them up the other night with my personal favorite- Porterhouse steak grilled to perfection. It was great. I'll miss it until next year.
Hey coal reaper, Don't give up! Heck, a few years ago I found some tall white ones along the train tracks in town, full sunlight! I learned from a old "master" of a hunter, both morels and wild asparagus...after the track find, his theory of southeast slopes, when then poplars leaf out, and maypoles start up was out the window! I do find a lot here under the 1st 2 conditions, tho. Another thing to consider- they say not to carry them in a plastic or otherwise solid sided container; if there's any spores remaining on the highly sought 'shroom, an open mesh type bag or basket is supposed to be the bees knees! The old, or shall I say odd fella that introduced me to morel hunting had a photo of a giant morel next to a 750 ml. bottle of wine- cleared the top of the bottle!!! I know, no pics, never happened- but I tell y'all I saw the picture and knew the photographer who snapped the pic. I'll see if I can locate it. Might be as hard to find as coal reaper finding morels! J/K, coal R. Now, asparagus on the other hand, is some sweet huntin' Eric VW
Morals are awsome if u find them wash them real well then put them in a pan with butter an flour cook them up an enjoy there awsome I get some every yr.
I'm not really a morel hunter. I've got friends that are though. I do plan on learning more about where to look for them. My wife makes an awesome dungeness crab and morel risotto. So flipping good!!
Isn't still too early for morels? Obviously, I am in Minnesota and we don't see the morels until April or May. I have a buddy in Virginia and he says his morel season is late Feb./ early March. My uncle that taught me mushroom hunting always said, You"ll see the morels when the lilacs are in bloom. Check near the dead elms. Stay way away from the oaks. Don't know why just been told that.
