I cut this down for a local church. My wife's uncle wanted the wood, but didn't feel safe cutting it down. It would have been a few minute job, but ran into some metal with my xpw. That left me with my 044 and a 20" bar, which made it hard to reach that last bit of holding wood behind the hinge. Everything went as planned otherwise. If the butt looks a little weird, it's because I made a frontal and side bore. It was 50" at waist height, and I had about 22 inches of usable bar length.
Darn that metal. It's metal in a white oak trunk, comparable to yours, that's keeping me from cutting it into rounds. I hope you don't discover any more as you get that into stove-sized pieces. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Wow that thing is huge! 50"! Awsome job! Too bad you can't mill any boards out of it due to the metal. Was the tree dead?
It had a few leaves on it, but was on its way out. I wouldn't want a tree like this if it was given to me. Wayyyyy to much work for the btus (in my humble opinion anyway). If I had a mini excavator with a hydro wedge it would have been fun though. This big stuff is fun to cut and miserable to handle. I would imagine 16" pieces off of that butt would weigh 350-500 lbs a piece. I would have loved to have sold it to a mill, but no one in their right mind would have taken it.
I don't blame you one bit. I am not sure if you saw the thread that Scotty Overkill started Slaying the monster..... We kind of had the same issue with metal in the tree but we haven't found any yet. We helped my cousin load the logs onto his log trailer he has a saw mill and it going to give an attempt to see how many boards that he can get out of it. Wow that was a fiasco, but hey the best part was that we didn't have to man handle those huge rounds!
I flat out knew I was going to find it. I told my uncle I might have found a horseshoe in it if I would have cut a little higher or even a civil war musket ball lol.
