I'm taking a break from working on prints-(yeah, it's 2:40am, but I have to get them done), so I was wondering... -I'm thinking a Ruger American Compact (Bolt rifle), not sure about the caliber. I'm leaning .17 HMR The ballistic reports I've read are favorable, and ammo is available locally. Intended targets would be paper and squirrels, maybe a fox inside of 100yrds. So, out to 150-175yrds, who likes what? Realistically, 50- 125yrds. for my purposes. Thanks, JB
only experience with 17 is the Mach 2.. red tipped bullets 300 yards pulled gophers out of holes nice flat shooting varmint gun.. bull barrel break action hated it because ejected bullets hit me in face.. sold to a buddy he loved it as hes left handed and 6 inches taller ejected bullets went in his shirt pocket
.hmr in a savage I'd personally skip right over Ruger....... the .17 imo Only because it's more accurate than the wmr.
.17 hmr is a good rifle, they dont like us useing it for fox,if we do it must be on our licence,if caught shooting fox and not on your licence, then look out.big trouble.
Well, still going with the Ruger. It is a .17 HMR, be using a 6 x 18 I've had laying around for a while. I like the frangibility of the little 17 gr. bullets, should work well for me.
HMR in the savage , have one. At 25-70 yds in drops ground hogs on the spot. just fall over dead. There is only so much room in the case of each, the smaller more stable bullet is a winner.
From 50 - 125 a .17 is a pretty flat shooter and about as good as it gets for small varmints. I have a Ruger American compact in .22 that's more accurate than I am. I put an extended LOP, high comb stock module on it for me and swap it out for a shorter one for the kids. Both of my Ruger americans had a scratchy bolt out of the box but they smooth out on their own with enough cycles. My .22 is pretty slick now...the .308 needs some more reps but its better than it was when I got it.
Honestly, nope. That things a hot-rod but ammo doesn't seem readily available. The Ruger will be here next week, it's a done deal. I'm pretty excited to get my hands on it.
I have a Savage 93R17 .17 HMR with a heavy barrel and AccuTrigger. It's a tack driver. Cheap and fun to shoot too.
My local Gander Mountain always had ammo in stock. Now they are closed, so I don't know where I'll buy ammo now. I'm pretty well stocked at the moment, but there's no such thing as too much ammo!! There are some local gun shops that can get pretty much anything tho. So I'm not too concerned. Good luck with the new rifle. Any new gun is always fun!
RuGer manufacturing in in N.H across border I can check on HMR ammo this weekend RParrotte I goto Plattsburgh area ever month if ya won't me to check...
Yup. I have some CCI A17 17gr. ammo coming in also. I know this was designed for performance in the Savage, but the extra 100 fps has me intrigued. I shall try it.
No, I do have a Ruger American in 30-06. They are good shooters. mine is very accurate. I don't have a 17 but know guys that do and they love em. If I was going to decide between the two it would be the 17. One guy shoots prairie dogs with one so far out they have to pump sunshine to get there just to see with his scope..
Once I get "hands on", I'll post the initial results. I'll pick up some Hornady to test against the CCI. Check in later on this, 2 weeks? or so. I'll post here.
