In the tradition of horizontal vs. vertical splitting and top covering vs. non top covering wood stacks!

Do you prefer gas or charcoal when grilling?

I have gas and I cook with propane!

I love charcoal but I don't want to wait that long to cook.

I use both. Gas if I'm in a hurry. Coals if I want more flavor and don't mind waiting 20ish minutes for the charcoal chimney to do its thing.

For anyone who hasn't used a charcoal chimney...you're missing the boat.

Putting charcoal then wood for smoke or flavor on top. This will be the first year Ive used hefty splits. None of this chip crap or chunks the size of a golf ball. I regularly put something larger than my fist to keep the heat high.

^^Best answer. Gas is convenient, charcoal cooks better. Choose accordingly.

You got that right. And if you're lazy, you can use the side burner of the gas grill to fire up the charcoal chimney! It only take about a minute or so of med heat flame and your chimney is lit.

Gas when I'm lazy or in a hurry. Home-made charcoal when I have time. It's important to get extra beer drinking / fire watching time sometimes.

Like everyone else, I prefer charcoal, but after ten years of BBQ catering, propane is the fastest/easiest way.
And I've got to say, I've never had someone ask if my food was cooked on gas because they could taste it.

We use hardwoods in the cooker when smoking BBQ.
